Charging - Led blinking blue and red when plugged

Thanks for the debugging tips. I actually tested the macbook pro cable with the PPM and PPM adapter, forgot to mention it. But I didn’t test charging the macbook pro with the PPM adapter and it charges my laptop! So if something really is off it’s the PPM and possible the charging chip :unamused:

Amazing by the way how badly documented PD profiles are from consumer products. I realised I do have another usb PDF charging device at gine. I’ve been looking at it for 5 weeks: a new monitor which usb-c video cable which PD charges my macbookpro. Duh! But not a word on the spec sheet at which voltages it can charge: PD 60W.

If the adapter and cable both work and since you only started getting this problem after the update have you tried a factory reset yet? If not that might be worth a try or roll back to the previous firmware, I don’t feel it’s hopeless yet,
Btw the battery percentage or time remaining may not be accurate when it’s first turned on, you need to run it for a little while and it will settle in

Last night while testing I also ran into this alternating police lights issue
:oncoming_police_car:

However, it turned out that I hadn’t plugged the cable in correctly. After unplugging and plugging in again the issue was gone.

Note that I’m not saying that those with the symptoms above aren’t plugging in properly or that there is no problem. All I’m saying is that for me, a simple re-seat of the cable worked to get rid of the alternating LED.

So if you run into this issue by all means try some of the suggestions above to troubleshoot, including a simple unplug and plug, making sure the connector is properly seated.

I’ve tried to look up on this forum how to do a ‘factory reset’, but it is not in any of the setup menu’s and I haven’t found much in other news items, except for holding the power button for 30 seconds in one post. (edit:) But this doesn’t seem to trigger anything. With the PPM turned off it switches on when you hold the power button. And when you press/hold power when the PPM is turned on, it powers down, only to power on again after 5-6 seconds.

Could a ‘factory’ reset be documented somewhere prominent, below the guides menu perhaps?

Go to Settings > Software Update > Factory Reset to perform the reset please.

I have charging issues too, and yes, I did a factory reset after updating to 1.1.0.

Red and blue blinking, never stops, and:

Turned off while charging, the pico charges to 96% ( checking by turning it on) but never gets to 100% [EDIT] : Well, it might, and then start decharging?
Checking after 2 hours more, the battery is now at 85%

Now charging, whilst turned on, it seems to be charging again, slowly got to 86% .

[EDIT]: Upgrading to 1.1.01 now
[EDIT1]: stopped at 89%, charging while turned on with 1.1.01
[EDIT2] Charging further, while turned off = now 82% !
[EDIT3] Left it for a while, turned off, not charging = now 95% , when turned on.

No Feedback yet from the Support.

In the meantime my PPX now suddenly went off when I remove the USB-C Powercable, even when the launcher says the battery has :100:% capacity

Hmm, immediate power off without the “Shutdown…” dialog? The flashing red/blue seems to be generated directly from the STAT pin of the bq24171 chip (https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/bq24171.pdf?&ts=1589663142545).

For some reason the blue LED is just an inverted version of the red LED (red LED is on when STAT pin is low, blue LED is on when STAT is high).

There are a few different errors all indicated by flashing, unfortunately TI combines them all into the same indication: “Blinking at 0.5 Hz when fault occurs,
including charge suspend, input overvoltage, timer fault and battery absent.”. Not super helpful.

Hi @SchmuFoo I have escalated your ticket, you should receive a response asap.

Yes exactly, the battery usage possibility is completly gone.

Thanks Prashant, I have received it and filled the form now (For this please also see my Post in the “Staff” Category)

Sounds like your battery is completely discharged/broken/disconnected then. It has been working fine for you for quite some time though before it gave up? I see that you have returns paperwork in process, hopefully you get a replacement sooner than later!

I sent an email on May 7th to support. Support replied by asking me to answer a troubleshooting questionnaire. I did answer the same day. Since then, no answer despite of my regular requests (once a week).
Can you please help me?

Same issue for me after software update. Super annoying. Charge locks to 82% while powered off as someone else noted. Hopefully it’s software related as it seems to much of a coincidence with all the other reports.

I just received mine and was even about to write a positive first impressions post, but I noticed there is some issue with the charging - it was 80+% when I turned it off (leaving it connected to the charger), 30 minutes later I turned it on and it was around 75% - ok, might be some glitch in the first charging, so I decided to leave it plugged in until it’s fully charged, but it does not look like it will ever reach 100%.
I have the same :oncoming_police_car: police mode with alternating red/blue light and it’s the same if it is turned off or on. After that I tried connecting it to a 65W usb-c PD powerbank and it’s the same. Changing the usb-c cable did not help as well and I don’t think I have a high-powered usb-c pd wall charger to test that as well, but since I have :oncoming_police_car: with the powerbank as well, another charger might not be the solution… I hope I don’t have to send it back, but that might be the last option if a software fix does not come. Unfortunately, I have no idea if the latest update introduced this bug as some here are speculating, because the first thing that I did after turning it on was to update it.

I will run it for a while without the charger to see if it behaves better when the battery percentage is lower and will keep everyone updated.

Update 1: Ran it down to 58% and now with it does charge (only red light) with the original charger as well with my powerbank. So it seems like the problem starts at higher battery percentages. I will try to deplete the battery before charging and do another attempt at a full charge.
Update 2: Used the projector on battery until it turned itself off and then started charging it. Once it started alternating blue/red light, I turned it on and it was at 92% charged, but once it was on, it kept charging (constant red light, blue stopped alternating) for a few minutes, it reached 93% and then started the police mode again.

Please someone from Philips acknowledge that this problem is being worked on (just tagging @Philips_Support_P @IvoGrijt ), it does not look like an isolated case and if it keeps switching from mains to battery all the time, it will destroy the battery life, so I will be forced to return it. If you want me to do some specific tests, let me know.

It’s not widespread but seems to be reported more often lately. We did ask some users to return theirs and also asked a few to gather adb logs for us. Depending on your tech savvy you could perhaps also gather some logs that may indicate whether it’s the unit stopping the charging or the charger failing to deliver constantly.

If you give me some tips on how to turn on the developer mode (I did not see a full settings menu yet), I might be able to get adb logs, no problem (I’m a software developer, so should be able to assist once pointed in the right direction  ). After all it’s preferable to help you find a software solution than to wait for months for a replacement
It looks like the problem becomes worse once the battery is closer to max capacity and there is no load on it - when it was turned on at 94%, it was alternating red/blue, but after that I turned it off, the speed at which the red/blue was changing increased - it was a bit more stable when there was drain on the battery.

Here’s instructions for access the hidden menu. In there, you can also enable the developer mode.

Thanks, I just found it a minute ago, I’m checking now if my current adb drivers will work with it.

I sent him the instructions for adb logging via a PM
