Apologies in advance for my ignorance, but can anyone tell me what ‘S YouTube’ is? I am sure that originally the YouTube app on the Home screen didn’t have the ‘S’ designation in the graphic icon. I’m just curious!

It’s the Smart Youtube app (it’s a different app than the default one). The smart youtube app is hardware-accelerated and also skips ads.
The standard one is not hardware accelerated.
… Ah, I see. Thank you very much for letting me know! Can you please advise me if I should remove it in favour of the ‘standard’ app? Is there a benefit one has over another?
Finally, is the hardware accelerated one better or worse?

standard youtube app has choppy playback because it has to decode the videos in software. It also has ads.
Also smart youtube lets you login to your own account whereas standard (at least at one point) did not.
If possible, stick with the hardware-accelerated one unless you’ve got a reason not to.
