Hey Etherion,

Were you able to downgrade from the latest update?

No, I have tried with a zip file for 1.0.29, but during the update it shows an error and reboots back into the latest firmware. It might be incompatible or the downgrade procedure is not the same as the regular upgrade.

I have also sent a description of the problem now to the screeneo support email to have an official ticket number.

@Philips_Support_P and @IvoGrijt

is it safe to keep using the projector until the problem is resolved? I am afraid that the constant charging and discharging of the battery when plugged in might cause permanent damage to the battery by the time the problem is solved.

Just received my PPM yesterday and ran into this issue as well.
The red/blue LED flashes whenever I plug in the originally provided USB-C cable and power brick but the projector seems to charge up to 100%.

Here’s the events that happened.

  • Image mode: PPM is set to NORMAL mode.
  • USB-C cable and power brick used: original that came in the PPM box.
  • Software version: upgraded to 1.1.0.2
  • Power LED is solid blue when PPM is turned on and no cable is plugged in.
  • Battery icon on top, right-hand side screen always displays the CHARGING icon when cable is plugged in.

[June 23, 2020]

  • Turned on PPM for the first time.
  • Connected to WIFI and updated software to 1.1.0.2.
  • Launched YouTube and signed in, closed app.
  • Launched Netflix, didn’t update the software, logged in and closed app.
  • Turned off the unit and kept the PPM charging using the provided charger cable and PPM power brick. (Made sure the plug is firmly plugged into the wall socket.)
  • The charging LED was solid red at this time and everything seemed normal.
  • After about 2 hours, came back and noticed power LED flashing red and blue.
  • Turned on PPM and battery read 95%.
  • Even with the power cable connected (USB-C, POWER), battery slowly goes down from 95% to 88% in NORMAL mode.
  • When unplugging power cable, power LED changes to solid blue.
  • Waited for about 10 minutes with PPM on, battery reads 87%.
  • Plugged the power cable back into USB-C (Power). The power LED is solid RED.
  • Battery icon on the screen shows charging and percentage went up from 87% to 88%.
  • After about 5 to 10 minutes, the LED is flashing red and blue again. (The battery icon on the screen always displays the charging icon when the cable is plugged in.)
  • Turned off PPM, left it unplugged overnight.

[June 24, 2020]

  • Turned on PPM back on this morning. LED is solid blue and the battery reads 95%.
  • Plugged the power cable to USB-C (POWER) and the LED starts flashing red and blue again immediately, but battery icon on the screen changes to charging as always.
  • After about 40 minutes or so, the battery percentage on the screen went from 95% to 100% Charged.
  • Did a factory reset from the Software Update page. Power LED is still flashing red/blue when USB-C power cable is plugged into unit. Turns solid blue when cable is unplugged.
  • The screen says “100% Charged”, but the battery icon still displays CHARGING icon and the red and blue LED is still flashing.
  • After leaving the unit on for about 30 more minutes, the battery status remains at 100% charged.

[June 24, 2020 Update]

  • Left the PPM turned on to PRESENTATION mode to drain battery until it turned off by itself.
  • Plugged power cord and left PPM to charge while leaving PPM turned off.
  • After about 2~3 hours, noticed PPM power LED is flashing red/blue again.
  • Turned on PPM, battery percentage says 95% and power LED turned solid red. (I think my PPM only charges up to 95% while powered off and doesn’t charge beyond 95%, and this is when LED starts flashing red/blue.)
  • After 10~15 minutes or so, power LED is still solid red and battery is being charged from 95% to currently 97%. (Earlier this morning, power LED was flashing red/blue while charging battery from 95% to 100%, but it’s solid red now.)
  • Turned off PPM to see if red/blue flashing symptom goes away, but as soon as I turn off the PPM with power cord still plugged in, power LED changes from solid red to red/blue flashing.
  • After about 30 minutes, turned PPM back on and battery is still at 97%, meaning it didn’t charge since I turned it off 30 minutes ago. (Power LED turned solid red as soon as I turned on the PPM.)
  • Power LED is still solid red and battery is being charged from 97% to 98%.
  • Power LED is now flashing red/blue again at 98%, but battery seems to be charging as it now says battery is at 99% charged.

-------End of Update-----

I can charge my Galaxy S10 5G phone using the original USB-C power cord and power brick that came with the PPM. However, I don’t have another power brick to do further testing on the PPM.

Also sent a report to support@screeneo.com with “PPX620 RED/BLUE BLINKING LED” as subject line.

For reference: I’m waiting for a replacement Pico, with this exact issue (see Battery percentage sticks to 76% after charging whole night )
That unit arrived in Hong Kong on the 13/06, and should be a candidate for diagnosing the problem.

After creating a ticket with the support and explaining the situation, I have been given directly instructions to start the return request process. I’m a bit disappointed, because there are indications that this might be a result from the new firmware and nothing guarantees that a new unit will fix this, only that it will result in more months without the projector…

You don’t have to fill them in just yet. Let me get in touch with @Philips_Support_P and find out where we are on debugging this issue.

Same here
They told me to fill the return form, but im not filling it just yet.
Let’s wait couple of days and see what the engineers have to say about it.

Hi,
my PPM arrived 2 days ago and I ran into the issue as well. When it is charged (about 90% and higher) it goes into blinking mode even with original charger properly plugged in.
The more alarming thing is that I can hear power supply humming in the rithm of blinking. It seems like the defective charging chip is tring to charge baterry anyway. This discontinous charging cycle cannot be good fot the baterry and I am affraid that it may dicrease its lifespan. I am able to reach 100% though. The blinking continues even then.

Do you have another charger you can test with? I’m still not convinced it’s a defective charging chip, but rather a charger failing to deliver the requested voltage / amperage once hot.

If you get it to 90% and it starts to blink, turn off the PPX, unplug the charger, and let it cool down. Then later on you plug everything back in once the charger is cool, and you power up the PPX. If it goes to just being red then with no siren lights, it is most likely a charger issue.

I tried it with different charger (Apple 95 W). I plugged it in when the PPM was about 35% (power off). I didn’t catch exact moment when it started blinking again but it behaves in the same pattern. Now it is 97% and blinking.
Furthermore, the light source is super weak. I’ll make comparison later but it is way worse than my second 500 ANSI lumens projector. Could it be some problem with the power circuit or is it still caused by the charger?

If it’s not getting enough power from the charger, then it will:

  • blink in siren-like fashion to alert you to this;
  • switch to a lower brightness level as it’s operating on the battery power.

95W doesn’t say enough, as the 95W indication could be from the 20V level giving 4,75A but with the 15V still only giving 15V 2A. So it’s important to test with another charger with at least 15V 3A, regardless of the total or highest wattage of the charger.

The Apple charger has 15 V and 3 A so 45 W. I guess that It should be enough but the light is still dim and LED is blinking.
The blinking is not uniform (duration of flashes is changing). I dont think that is alerting signal but it is switching between charging and idle. That is reason why the original power source is humming.

[Update June 28, 2020]

I purchased a USB-PD 100W charger to see if the original charger is causing the issue.
However, the red/blue LED siren flashing symptom is still present and is identical to the issue I’m experiencing when using the original charger provided by Philips.

Here’s the spec of the new charger I purchased.

USB-C PD output: 60W Max (5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A, 15V/3A, 20V/3A)
Here’s a YouTube video of someone else who reviewed the charger I purchased. (Language is in Korean tho.)

The charger has a 60W USB-C, a 30W USB-C, and two USB-A ports and I ran my test on the USC-C 60W port.

Next, I’ll test using a different cable which I haven’t received yet, but at this point, I doubt the issue (in my case) is related to the charger or cable, but with the PPM itself. I’ll have more updates once I receive my new cable.

[Update July 2, 2020]
Purchased a 2 meter USB-PD 100W (USB 3.0) cable.
It will charge the PPM and my Galaxy S10 5G phone, but the red/blue siren flashing issue persists.
So, I’m concluding the red/blue flashing issue in my case is not related to the charger nor the cable, but the PPM itself. :frowning:

I received a return ticket ID through support@screeneo.com but plan on running a cable test, and see what the Engineers have to say about this issue before sending in my PPM for replacement.

Yes the battery drains while plugged in and the unit is turned on. I have to turn the unit off to charge it. Havent tried the different brightness modes. What do you suggest I do?

I have the same issue…
It doesn’t charge more than 60%

When charger is still plug and ppm on, it discharge my PPM. i need to be off.

The charger works because I am able to charge my power bank and my computer.
My power bank 20V, 2,25A, 45w PD do the Same problem with PPM, I have alternative blue and red light.

It worked fine when I have received it

Hello @IvoGrijt,

Sorry in advance if the following seems like a rant. but information regarding this issue has been sparse from Philips side.

I would like to know

  1. Have you found out if it is a software or hardware issue?
  2. Would it affect the battery if we continue using the projector until the problem is solved?
  3. is there any way we can be of help?

I am more than happy to assist you guys in sorting out this problem.

thanks

I’ve been waiting for about a month for answers to the same questions and it looks that more and more users are experiencing this issue, so it should be quite high on the priority list. I really hope that we get an adequate answer from the source soon.
